The input trim can also be used to prevent clipping in the rare cases where clipping may be a problem and bringing up the level of a track for an increased amount of color. A level control determines the amount of the Phoenix II process integrated into the audio signal, and an input trim determines "how hard you hit the tape." Because the DSP process is level dependent, the input level trim control has been improved and an output trim control has been added. Gold is the position where the color is approximately flat in frequency response, with Sapphire being a brighter, and Opal being a warmer tonality.

Phoenix II has five different tape-analog characteristics, The type is selected with a switch for easy comparison between the types, and the brightness is also selected with a switch. Phoenix II is a ground-up application derived from HEDD technology, and specifically engineered and optimized for Avid's AAX architecture. The Phoenix II process not only incorporates the nonlinear saturation characteristics created by magnetic tape itself, but also includes the interrelation of an analog tape recorder's record/reproduce electronics and equalization curves. His intimate knowledge of analog electronics, as well as decades of experience as a recording engineer has spawned a very useful, musical suite of plug-ins.

Phoenix II uses 32 bit floating point math and has a lower noise floor than the original release.ĭesigner Dave Hill has crafted this software with the same attention to detail he used to create the electronics for ATR Service's much heralded "Aria" discrete tape recorders. Phoenix II runs both NATIVE and DSP on Avid's AAX format.

He single-handedly popularised the PWM compressor, and some piece of his equipment is in almost every high-end mixing or mastering studio. An upgrade from the TDM version to Phoenix II is $65 US retail. In case you aren't familiar with Crane Song or the man behind it, David Hill, you should know that he's a true genius in audio technology.

I cannot recommend any other tape emulation plugin as high as this one (although respected people will rave about the Slate VTM, many tests have shown that it does in fact degrade the audio quality, as talked about above). However, if you have the expendable cash, and you want a true tape emulation, this plugin is absolutely stellar for its purpose. The only reason I'm giving this plugin a 4/5 instead of a 5/5 is because it is NOT REQUIRED to make great music! So many people get obsessed with the equipment and plugins, they forget that what really matters is the engineering technique and the musician. This will give you the most accurate tape emulation, as the effect of the tape saturation really starts to work its magic when all of the tracks are summed together (obviously all those famous songs recorded on tape had many many tracks summed together). The effect is subtle, so I recommend adding it to each and every track in your sessions. This is a known effect of analog tape saturation, yet most "tape emulation" plugins just distort the signal (adding non-musical saturation, i.e., harmonics that aren't related the fundamental frequency).īecause of this, I cannot give enough praise to this plugin. After doing some analysis, it appears that this plugin actively reads the fundamental frequency of the signal and adds musical harmonics to it. After doing many blind tests, this plugin has proven to make almost any track sound better at equal - or even slightly less - amplitudes. The Crane Song Phoenix is NOT one of these plugins.

The increased volume leads you to believe that it's better and fuller, but in reality the opposite has happened. However, 95% of tape emulation plugins actually just distort the signal slightly (reducing the quality of the audio) and then boost the signal by 0.5dB or so. Many people are "wowed" by most tape emulation plugins immediately because when they insert it on their tracks it sounds bigger and fuller. There are tons (probably too many) tape emulation plugins out there, and I've used most of them.
